Brown Bag LunchNational Innovation Policy in Ireland - Current Status and Lessons Learned 

 Ireland’s new innovation strategy and plan has received much attention in European capitals in recent months as an example of the type of “new thinking” required to address a number of fundamental issues facing Europe’s political and economic leadership. Recognizing that the highly successful “Celtic Tiger” strategy of the 1980s - 1990s is no longer a viable option, Ireland has fully embraced the imperative to shift its economy towards greater reliance on entrepreneurship, innovation, intellectual property generation and management, the Irish diaspora and a “Smart Economy” approach built on information systems, medical technologies and alternative energy as the primary engines of future job growth and social stability. Burton Lee, who served as a leading member of the Irish national Innovation Taskforce, will discuss: ·         The roles of angel and venture finance, university research and technology transfer, university-industry collaboration, hi-tech startup creation and incubation, enterprise innovation, the legal and regulatory environment, and cultural attitudes towards risk and failure in developing a robust and sustainable innovation ecosystem.  ·         Lessons learned from the Irish experience that European and Latin American countries and regions could consider in developing their own national innovation strategies.

 Burton Lee leads Stanford Engineering’s European Entrepreneurship in the Mechanical Engineering Department. His management and technical experience includes senior executive and research positions with Hewlett Packard, GE, Global Research, DaimlerChrysler AG and NASA in the United States, Europe and Japan.He is Managing Partner of Innovarium Ventures, a strategic, financial and technical advisory services firm based in Silicon Valley, and also serves as Principal and co-founder of Space Angel Network, a professionally managed national network of accredited investors focused on seed and early-stage aerospace-related ventures. Dr. Lee holds a PhD in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from Stanford University
